SGA Approves $2.5 Million Student Budget for 2024-2025 at Auburn University
The Auburn University Student Government Association (SGA) convened on September 23, 2024, to approve the new student activity budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins on October 1, 2024. This budget, totaling approximately $2.5 million, is set to support a variety of student organizations and programs across the campus.
Key Budget Allocations
The University Program Council received the largest share of the budget, amounting to $832,157.50. However, this figure reflects a significant decrease of roughly $164,000 compared to last year’s request of $996,370. Here’s a breakdown of the allocations:
- Executive: $236,500.00
- Special Events: $235,000.00
- Interactive Events: $103,000.00
- Holidays and Traditions: $98,200.00
- Live Entertainment: $65,500.00
- Films: $45,000.00
- Pop-Up Events: $27,200.00
- Marketing: $14,000.00
- Student Stipends: $7,757.50
The Student Involvement Administration secured the second-largest allocation with $515,776.24, representing an increase of about $128,000 from the previous year. This funding will be utilized for various expenses, including student worker wages and events like the Miss Auburn University Pageant. The largest portion of these funds, $112,000, is earmarked for communications and marketing efforts.
SGA Budget Breakdown
The SGA itself received $349,552.50, distributed across fourteen categories. Seven of these categories were allocated $10,000 or more:
- Graduate and Professional Schools: $131,550.00
- Athletic Programming: $51,300.00
- Aubie: $50,000.00
- Hey Day: $50,000.00
- Student Stipends: $27,552.50
- Communications and Marketing: $10,000.00
- Miss Auburn: $10,000.00
In addition, Auburn’s student organizations collectively received $162,442.50, with $150,000 allocated to a general fund for these groups. The International Student Organization was given a separate allocation of $114,342.50, showing an increase of over $11,000 from the last fiscal year. Notable allocations include:
- Peace Dinners: $30,000
- ISO Social Hours: $50,000
The Black Student Union will receive $89,442.50, which falls short of its request for $128,475.92 from the previous year, reflecting a decrease of $39,000.
Support for Student Media and Service Programs
Funding for student media and service programs is also substantial, with allocations as follows:
- Student Media: $220,827.49
- The Glomerata: $95,399.50
- Eagle Eye TV: $53,449.49
- WEGL Radio: $39,238.00
- The Auburn Circle: $32,740.50
Service programs, including the Auburn University Dance Marathon and the Beat Bama Food Drive, received the following funding:
- Beat Bama Food Drive: $65,000.00
- IMPACT: $57,500.00
- General Service Programs: $25,110.50
- AUDM: $18,000.00
Will Goodner, the SGA treasurer, highlighted the budget’s potential impact on student life, emphasizing its focus on enhancing resources and support systems. He stated, “The SGA budget for Fiscal Year ’25 is poised to greatly enhance the student experience by expanding access to vital resources, upgrading campus facilities and strengthening financial and mental health support services.”
It’s important to note that each enrolled student contributes to the student activity budget through a semesterly activity fee, which amounted to $2.4 million for the previous fiscal year.
