Microsoft Unveils New Disc-less Xbox Series X Design and Advanced Controller Features

Microsoft is gearing up to unveil a redesigned version of its Xbox Series X console, codenamed “Brooklin,” in 2024. Recent documents from the ongoing FTC vs. Microsoft case have shed light on the features and specifications of this upcoming all-digital console.

New Design and Features

The revamped Xbox Series X boasts a cylindrical shape, departing from the boxy design of its predecessor. Notably, this console will not include a disc drive, emphasizing a fully digital gaming experience. With an upgrade to 2TB of storage—double the current capacity—gamers can expect more space for their favorite titles. Additional enhancements include a USB-C front port that supports power delivery, along with an upgraded controller designed to enhance gameplay.

Introducing the “Sebile” Controller

The new controller, referred to as “Sebile,” is set for an early 2024 launch, carrying a price tag of $69.99. This controller introduces several innovative features, including:

  • An accelerometer that allows users to wake the controller simply by lifting it.
  • A two-tone color scheme that adds a fresh aesthetic.
  • Direct connectivity to cloud services and Bluetooth 5.2.
  • Enhanced haptic feedback, with the capability for the vibrations to double as sound output.
  • Quieter buttons and thumbsticks for a more discreet gaming experience.
  • A rechargeable, swappable battery, along with modular thumbsticks for customizable gaming.

While it’s unclear how the modular aspect will function—whether it will allow for interchangeable joystick tops similar to those found on Microsoft’s Elite controllers or a more complex setup akin to Sony’s DualSense Edge—gamers are intrigued by the possibilities.

Technical Upgrades

Internally, the Xbox Series X will be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E support and a Bluetooth 5.2 radio. Microsoft is also optimizing the console’s efficiency by shrinking its existing die to 6nm, which should enhance performance while reducing power consumption by 15%.

Price and Launch Timeline

Microsoft aims to maintain the current launch price of $499 for the Xbox Series X. The company is also planning a refresh for the Xbox Series S, which will feature 1TB of storage and will likely debut alongside the new Xbox Series X next September. This refreshed Series S will also come equipped with the new Sebile controller.

Future Innovations

Microsoft has outlined its ambitions for the Xbox Design Lab program, which aims to provide console customization options by 2030. Additionally, there are discussions regarding a new Elite controller that would incorporate the same updates as the main controller launch. This comprehensive strategy indicates Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing the gaming experience through both hardware and user personalization.
