Apple’s AirPods have become a staple in the world of true wireless earbuds, and anticipation is building for the upcoming AirPods 4. While Apple has yet to make an official announcement, the buzz surrounding these new earbuds suggests that a release is on the horizon. Additionally, a new iteration of the AirPods Pro, tentatively named AirPods Pro 3, is expected to follow in 2025.

Release Timeline

While a specific release date remains unclear, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the AirPods 4 might not ship until the latter half of 2024. Recent reports from Gurman indicate that production is set to ramp up in May, potentially aligning the launch with the iPhone 16, which is typically announced in September. Moreover, there’s speculation that the high-end AirPods Max could debut alongside the new AirPods during the last quarter of 2024.

Pricing Expectations

When it comes to pricing, we have some insights based on previous models:

Design and Features

Gurman speculates that the AirPods 4 will feature a refreshed design that combines elements from the AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro 2. Both versions are expected to come with shorter stems and improved fit. Notably, the premium model is likely to include active noise cancellation, which would necessitate the use of removable ear tips, similar to the AirPods Pro 2. The Lite model, on the other hand, may feature an all-white design with an open fit and a case reminiscent of earlier models.

Functionality Enhancements

Both versions are anticipated to incorporate force-sensor controls for easy playback adjustments and call management. USB-C charging is expected to be standard across both models, although the Lite version may forego wireless charging to keep costs lower. Reports also suggest that the AirPods 4 could feature Apple’s new H2 chip, enhancing battery life and introducing personalized volume settings that automatically adjust based on the user’s environment. The premium model will likely include Find My functionality for easy tracking, similar to the current AirPods Pro 2.
